Sports and Politics

US Sports seem to have gotten very political lately.  Athletes choosing to make political protest statements during sporting events isn’t anything new, but this is the first time I can remember owners participating.  As I’ve mentioned before, I think a lot of patriotic festivities during sports (ie Support the Troops!) are motivated by business sense rather than any true patriotism.  I do wonder if the owner participation is really genuine or rather motivated by a sense that it may be the popular thing to do.

Probably a mix of both.  Some owners probably are sincere in agreeing with the spirit of the protests, but if there wasn’t some public backing for it, and a correspondingly lower degree of risk, I really doubt you would see many of the owners participating.  Athletes, who have made their money from physical prowess and dedication, will be the ones more likely to be motivated by passion.  Generally billionaire sporting team owners are careful in their decision making.  Given that a lot of teams are in cities where the current US president isn’t particularly well liked, a very calculated decision could lead one to jumping on to the bandwagon.  We’ll see where things go from here.
